Ashley Tellis: Maritime Security, Rising Great Powers, and Challenges Ahead
AEI Event: "Protecting the Seas: Maritime Security in the Asia Pacific, America's Interests, and Asia's Future," April 14, 2009 www.aei.org The waters of the Asia Pacific are a dynamic epicenter of commerce, a fountainhead of natural resources, and a significant geostrategic theater for the region. The future prosperity of the area depends on the security of these seas, the responsible development of maritime resources, and the political stability of major Asian maritime powers. Yet the rise of naval competition and ongoing territorial disputes promise a more complex situation in the coming decades. How will existing US-Asian alliances adapt to these new challenges? In what ways will emerging naval technologies and doctrine influence regional security? How will trade be affected by threats that endanger safe passage? Leading maritime experts from the United States and Japan discussd these and other topics in a series of panel discussions. The Honorable Donald C. Winter, seventy-fourth secretary of the US Navy, delivered the keynote address.

Canadian Navy Centennial Celebration
Canadian Navy Centennial Celebration
VICTORIA - It is a tradition dating back more than three centuries. The Freedom of the City parade is held only once in a generation. The last time Victoria hosted the celebration was 25 years ago when the Navy marked its 75th anniversary. May 4th, 2010 is the Naval Centennial which is being celebrated with dozens of events throughout the year. The Freedom of the City parade attracted about 3000 personnel as well as veterans, spectators and dignitaries. The Commander of Maritime Forces Pacific and Joint Task Force Pacific says it is the Navy's hope that Canadians will join sailors across the country and serving overseas as they commemorate the past, celebrate today and commit to the future. For navy families and ships' crew alike, there is nothing that compares to that moment when a ship has returned to homeport. And there is nothing quite like that moment on the jetty, the hugs and kisses and tears of "the homecoming". The moment has been captured forever in a sculpture unveiled in the inner harbour today as part of the navy celebration. Included is an interview with Commander Tony Derosenroll of Maritime Forces Pacific.

Saving Underwater Cultural Heritage in Asia and Pacific
Saving Underwater Cultural Heritage in Asia and Pacific
URL: www.unescobkk.org Our underwater cultural heritage is under the increasing threat of looters, treasure and souvenir hunters, the lack of legal protection, and natural disasters. With the financial support of the Royal Government of Norway, UNESCO has initiated a project on "Safeguarding the Underwater Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific". Under this project, a regional field training centre was established in Chanthaburi, Thailand to build capacity and promote policies and best practices in maritime archaeology. To showcase the threatened underwater heritage and raise public awareness, the first ever exhibition in the Asia-Pacific region on "Underwater Cultural Heritage" was recently opened at Siam Ocean World in Bangkok, Thailand. Visitors journey through stunning underwater heritage scenes from around the world displayed in large photographs; view a replica of a shipwreck; explore discoveries from the seabed; and enjoy demonstrations by underwater archaeologists in an aquarium. The exhibition will travel around Thailand and eventually be displayed permanently at the National Maritime Museum in Chanthaburi, Thailand. The Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage was adopted by UNESCO in 2001. It is an international treaty on principles, standards and guidelines for protecting underwater cultural heritage.
